Have you noticed the other forum now requires you to be a "logged on" member to now read their "For Sale" and "Trains Wanted" sections of their forum?

I had heard of such shenanigans - ah well, their circus, their monkeys….and their loss.

Not surprised at all. I don't even visit there anymore. It's amazing how quickly you can lose interest in a site that's poorly managed. Aside from my many differences with that site's management over the years, I found the site largely unusable after they moved the search-function behind the subscriber/member curtain as well.

They do seem to go out of their way to make the place inconvenient.

There is always a way.

Say you want to know more about installing Kadee couplers.
Go to google
Type "OGR Forum Install Kadee Couplers"
Pick one of the choices provide
It's takes to that thread without signing in

I'd rather be lucky than good.

I agree completely here!!! They are not in it for the hobby, just for the money & limelight IMO.

Well, I found that they disabled those two sections of the forum about a week ago. One of my thoughts was what their paid advertisers think about this, if and when they find out. I would think that most of the Internet forums, regardless of type would track users and members and relate those numbers to existing or potential advertisers.

This forum tracks members and guests and I sure others do as well.

Some friends of mine have a monthly zoom meeting where we can discuss various topics. It was started when York meets were cancelled due to the pandemic. We average about six people participating lately but we have had as many as twenty. One of the Zoom participants is Charlie from Nassau Hobbies. They are an advertiser on that forum. I’ll bring up the topic at our next meeting and find out what it thinks about it.

Dave

Ditto, now they are hurting members by not allowing outsiders to see what’s for sale. Just when you think they can’t stoop any lower. I would get contact info from a memeber, ohwell not anymore

IMO forgetting for a moment about past personal grievances, the root issue is the difference between how a for profit forum operates versus a not for profit forum regardless of what the acronym may happen to be.

If one accepts the premise that the appeal and strength of any forum is the value to their members and prospects that they deliver making the Buy/Sell/WTB Forums only viewable to members makes a lot of sense.

It takes no particular skill to find complaints about Ebay fees/prices/rules/accuracy of item condition regardless of what is offered for sale.

Consequently any viable alternative to Ebay which offers lower prices/seller fees, reasonable expectation of seller accuracy in description and appropriate buyer performance is attractive. Add to that the personal familiarity of buyers and sellers to one another within these forums or user groups and you have something of considerable value for both parties.

If you have a robust Buy/Sell forum thread you have marketable value.

By making the Buy/Sell private any for profit forum/user group will prevent nonmembers from circumventing member fees as they contact their member pals directly because of past/current contact knowledge or having their member friends provide contact info of the seller.

Again IMO the only surprise is that it has taken this particular forum this long to wise up.

Once again Cyndi Lauper is right, money does change everything.

Ding! Ding! Ding! - We have a winner! You hit the nail on the head. If they keep this up, the nail will be in their own coffin. So disappointing. What was one a great thriving place has become such a difficult place to deal with. It's off my radar too.

It's becoming more and more of a 'private' forum. no worries that will kill the For Sale post with loss of traffic, fewer will use it and more will post here or other means of selling. Our club and many our friends that are on social media have left.

I don’t know how to post a portion of a quote so I’ll just paraphrase from one. I can understand the notion of a private forum but it was not a private forum when dozens of advertisers signed on due to the vast number of members and guests that said forum attracts.

Closing out the non-member traffic is or could be a breach of contract. I was a member and was dropped for no good reason or any explanation.

Of course nothing we say here will have any influence. The only influence is if the advertisers have a drop in revenue and traffic. Besides speaking with Charlie at the next zoom meeting I intend to speak to a number of the other advertisers at York to get their take on it.

As others have said here there is no reason to go there anymore.

There was once a question posted in a thread there. “Where do you go first”. The vast majority of the responders said “I go to the BUY/SELL forums first and then look at the rest”.
