KINGSFORD — A year ago, the Lake Linden-Hubbell and Stephenson girls shared the Upper Peninsula Division 3 track and field championship.

The Lakes kept the title all for themselves here Saturday by scoring 72 points. They were followed by Newberry 64 and Stephenson 62.

“Our regional has been tough since 2016,” LL-H coach Gary Guisfredi said. “Since that time, teams from our regional have won the U.P. Finals eight times. Emily (Jokela) scored 38 points alone today. Our shot putter (sophom*ore Maddy Dudenas) taking third and our girl (sophom*ore Cleo Milkey) taking fourth in long jump were big points. We knew Newberry and Stephenson were going to be tough.”

Jokela won the 100-meter dash in 13.04 seconds, then set U.P. titles in back-to-back races.

In the 400, Jokela was clocked at 58.61, topping the old mark (58.7) by Superior Central’s Lauren Spranger from 2011.

In the next race, Jokela took the 300 hurdles at 44.8 seconds and beat her old record (45.63) from a year ago, prior to taking second in the 200 (27.02)

“My starts were better than usual,” she said. “Those (open 400 and 300 hurdles) are tough races., but you just got to push through that. You always prepare for that in practice. I just try to beat everybody to the next hurdle.”

The Lakes, who finished undefeated this season, also won the 800 relay at 1:52.52.

“I think our handoffs were good,” senior Rebecca Lyons said. “It feels great to be U.P. champions. We were really excited about this meet. We knew Newberry and Stephenson were pretty good.”

Sophom*ore Keira Isaacson provided Dollar Bay with its lone first on her leap of five feet, three inches in high jump.

Ontonagon sophom*ore Violet Amos took second in the 400 (59.23), placed third in the 100 (13.15) and 200 (27.24) and anchored the winning 1600 relay (4:29.23).

Dollar Bay senior Taryn Maki placed third in the 3200 (13:18.46).

Carney-Nadeau senior Samantha Kedsch set a U.P. and school record in long jump at 16-11, topping the old mark (16-7½) by Ontonagon’s Olivia Suomis in 2012.

“I was hoping for 17 feet, but I’m excited to get the record,” she said. “Overall, this was a good day for our team. Long jump is my favorite event. It’s a challenge, but I do well in it. There’s a lot of little techniques. There’s always something to learn.”

Bark River-Harris was crowned D-2 champion for the third consecutive time with 127½ points. The Broncvos were followed by West Iron County 82 and Ishpeming 71.

Hanco*ck won the 3200 relay at 10:41.48. Senior Brielle Kero, who anchored that relay, placed second in the 400 (58.65) and third in the 800 (2:27.96).

West Iron County senior Danica Shamion won the 100 (12.65) and set U.P. records in the 200 (26.17) and 400 (56.94) and added a first in high jump (5-1) and is among just nine girls to win four individual events at a Track and Fields Finals.

Shamion previously set the U.P. record in the 200 (26.34) and 400 (57.13) a year ago and set school records in the 200 (25.79), 400 (56.74) and high jump (5-5) in the Dan Juntilla Memorial Invitational at Houghton last week.

“I went out with a bang, which is something I wanted to do as a freshman” she said. “I kept thinking ‘take it one step at a time.’ The high jump runway was a little slippery (during brief rainfall). It was hard to get your grip.”

Sault Ste. Marie was crowned D-1 champion for the first time in 23 years with 117 points.

The Blue Devils were followed by Negaunee 94, Gladstone 65 and defending champion Marquette 58.

Houghton sophom*ore Tessa Rautiola won the 3200 in 12:13.39 and ran third leg in the winning 3200 relay in a season-best 10:10.38.

“Our school record is 10:08,” she said. “We didn’t get the record this year, although we’re absolutely happy we won. There was some miscommunication in the exchange zone which created some confusion. Otherwise, I think we would have had it.”

In the open 3200, she was followed by Marquette sophom*ore Ella Fure (12:13.46) and junior Monet Argeropoulos (12:23.91).

Calumet senior Caitlyn Strom took pole at 10 feet, edging Ishpeming Westwood junior Lexii Olson on a tiebreaker.

Gladstone set a U.P. and school record in the 400 relay at 50.78, topping the previous best by Marquette (51.11) three years ago.

Gladstone junior Jacie Tuljus, who anchored that relay, added firsts in the 100 (12.65) and 200 (28.65), and placed second in the 400 (1:02.54).

“My starts were slow, but what we did in the 400 relay was good for today,” she said. “Everybody was pretty hyped. We’re happy with it. Overall, I’m happy with the way everything went.”

Strom was runner-up in long jump (15-9) and 100 (13.1).
