The California Lottery withholds a percentage of prizes greater than $5,000 as federal tax.

About the California Lottery
Voters approved the California Lottery in 1984. Scratcher sales went live in October the following year, and Lotto game draws started in 1986.
California law requires that 87% of revenue be allocated to prizes and state education.
The lottery added Mega Millions to its portfolio in 2005. The first draw was held in Hollywood and the minimum jackpot was $15 million. Californians queued up well in advance to purchase their tickets. Mega Millions remains one of the state's most popular lotteries today.
In 2013, the state added Powerball, with the first draw taking place on April 10. California also has five state-only lottery games, including the horse-racing-themed Daily Derby.

The California Lottery withholds a percentage of lottery winnings over $5,000 for federal taxes. Check the Tax Information section for more details. Based on your overall annual income and tax liability, you may also be liable for state and local income taxes.
For most California Lottery games, you have 180 days from the draw date to claim your prize. The only exceptions are Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots—you have one year to claim these prizes.
Of every dollar spent by lottery players, $0.95 goes toward funding public schools, retail compensation, and prizes.
Lottery tickets can't be replaced if lost or stolen. Keep them in a safe place. Signing your ticket helps prove you own it, in case you lose it.
